The mandate
Three dates that affect nearly every German business
Since 1 January 2025 every domestic business must be able to receive, process and archive structured e-invoices — small businesses included. An e-mail inbox is enough as a channel, but the invoice itself is a data record under EN 16931, not a PDF.
From 1 January 2027, businesses with more than €800,000 in prior-year revenue must issue e-invoices for domestic B2B. From 1 January 2028 that applies to everyone, whatever their revenue.
Switching early removes the deadline pressure: you receive correctly from today, learn the formats on real invoices, and move your outgoing invoices when you are ready — not when you have to.
The statutory timeline
1 January 2025 — Obligation to receive
Every domestic business must be able to receive and process structured e-invoices — no transition period, no revenue threshold.
Today — The best time to switch
Receiving is already required, issuing is still optional — room to learn the formats on real invoices.
1 January 2027 — Obligation to issue, stage one
Applies to businesses with more than €800,000 in prior-year revenue, for domestic B2B.
1 January 2028 — Obligation to issue, everyone
Extends to all domestic B2B — including freelancers and small businesses.
Who it is for
Built for people who do it themselves
Two common situations, one tool — and e-invoicing is core to both.
Freelancers and sole traders
You write a handful of invoices a month and simply want them to be correct. The obligation to issue reaches you in 2028 — start with receiving, the rest follows step by step.
Small teams and SMEs
More invoices, more hands, and an accountant who expects clean data. For you the €800,000 threshold matters from 2027 — and a tool that carries the switch rather than slowing it down.
Standards
The formats everything is built on
erechnung.online is e-invoicing first: not a PDF tool with XML bolted on, but built for structured invoices from the first line.
- EN 16931
- The European norm behind every e-invoice — it defines what data an electronic invoice must carry.
- XRechnung
- The structured XML format of the German public sector: create and receive XRechnung — established in B2G and conformant to EN 16931.
- ZUGFeRD
- The hybrid of PDF and embedded XML: create and receive ZUGFeRD — the bridge between human and machine.

FAQ
The questions everyone is asking right now
What exactly is the German e-invoicing mandate?
Since 1 January 2025 every domestic business must be able to receive e-invoices. Issuing becomes mandatory in stages: from 2027 for businesses above €800,000 in prior-year revenue, and from 2028 for all domestic B2B. Invoices up to €250 gross and invoices to private individuals stay exempt.
I am a small business — does this really apply to me?
Yes. Receiving has been required since 2025, and from 1 January 2028 the obligation to issue applies to you too. The good news: there is still time to switch calmly.
Is a PDF not an electronic invoice?
No. In the legal sense an e-invoice is a structured data record under EN 16931 — XRechnung or ZUGFeRD from version 2.0.1. Since 2025 a plain PDF counts as an "other invoice" and may only be sent with the recipient's consent.
What does erechnung.online cost?
Nothing during Early Access. After that there is a permanently free plan up to 10 outgoing invoices a month, Start at €8.99 and Pro at €19.99 per month excluding VAT — e-invoicing is included in every plan.
Can I buy as a private individual?
No. The offer is directed exclusively at businesses within the meaning of § 14 BGB — which includes freelancers and small businesses, but not consumers.
